Manager’s Executive Summary

Does this have to be YOUR reality?

The entire interviewing system is built to reject people, not accept them.  Just look at the numbers. Hundreds of people apply for a single position and only one gets it.

It quickly becomes a matter of seeing who you can cross off, no matter how small the reason is. Then you can interview the survivors, using whatever you learn there to cross off the rest. So, it’s often a matter of hiring the survivor, someone who had no apparent flaws, rather than uncovering the best person for the job. The Psychology Of The Hiring Process – BizLibrary  https://www.bizlibrary.com/article/psychology-hiring-process/

What is better: to have the interviewer seeing you as the person TO HIRE WITH NO APPARENT FLAWS or seeing you as a person to “CROSS OFF” leaving you to defend your resume and career?

We’re going to let you in on a little secret: the average recruiter or hiring manager spends 6 seconds reading a resume.  August 2, 2017, Posted by Amy Elisa Jackson https://www.glassdoor.com/blog/scanning-resumes/

Regardless if a Hiring Manager spends 6 or 60 seconds, nearly all that time is spent reading your “Executive Summary” with the “Experience” section reviewed for titles, company names, and education.

Structure of the Executive Summary

First paragraph – the overview

First sentence: “I want to be a / I am a ___________” – the role you are applying for.

Rest of paragraph: an overview of managerial skills, technical expertise, and clarify any flaws.

Following paragraphs

Technical skillset paragraph: Demonstrate that you are a subject matter expert by listing out your specific technical skills proving to perform the role.  Imagine you met your Hiring Manager at a conference, and s/he asks you: what do you do?  You would never say “I am organized and responsible”.  You would get into the real detail (transferable skills) of your job.  Strong experience revising quarterly Financial Statements, implementing TRID, sitting on the Strategic Planning Committee, etc.

Managerial paragraph: detail your leadership skills as they relate to the specific role you are seeking.  What is the fit the new company thinks is best, a player-coach, a manager of managers, large department, small department, etc.  NOTE: don't over-sell large company experience (or any other quantifiable attribute) if the new institution is considerably smaller, managing a $400 million portfolio at a bank that has total assets of $400 million screams “I want a job with a much larger bank”.

Role-specific paragraph: additional areas that can be singled out in a unique paragraph are the strategic focus, strategic planning, IT/technical abilities, Board reporting, any other skill that is a must or highly desired that not all candidates have performed

Last paragraph

Demonstrate you are accomplished by providing a brief success story or accomplishment. Share a role-specific success so they keep reading

Suggestion:

Write your new Executive Summary as an addendum to your resume.  The math (reading a resume in seconds) means that the number of pages is of minor importance – it is not being read!  Focus on the Executive Summary.

Take “The Test”:

Have you quickly and effectively proven that you are a fit while eliminating all flaws?  Ask a smart friend that does NOT know your career path one question: what is my next job?  If your smart friend can’t figure out where you are going in your career then how will an uninformed and uninterested reader know?

Please take a look at candidates own work. I have not written any of these samples. Every candidate was interviewed, and most were hired.

Executive Summary

I am a hard-working financial professional with very diverse experiences across multiple industries including banking, public accounting, manufacturing, real estate, and teaching. I have accrued this experience over 19 years of high-quality performance. I am an individual who has a high degree of integrity, displays consistency in effort and a strong desire to succeed. I take pride in the quality of my work and hold myself and my team to the highest standard of performance regardless of requirements. In 2016, I was honored as a CFO Award winner by Smart CEO Magazine.

My experience as a public accountant has given me great technical insight into accounting rules and pronouncements. Even when performing in the industry, I kept my knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles sharp by taking a part-time position teaching continuing education classes to industry professionals. I had the opportunity to advise many CFO’s on accounting guidance and business strategy as an ancillary part of my role with Stegman and Company. This experienced prepared me to join The ABC BANK as the CFO while having never worked a day in a financial institution prior. My recent experience at ABC required me to understand financial reporting (including call report), treasury and liquidity management, facility operations, insurance contracts, stockholder communications, management of the investment portfolio, and month-end close consolidation.
